Michigan State Representative Lorence Wenke
In March 2004, the Michigan State House narrowly rejected a state constitutional amendment thanks to three Republicans who voted no. Two of the courageous Republicans faced primary challenges because of their "no" votes.
Here's what GOP State Representative Lorence Wenke from Kalamazoo County said about his 'no' vote. "Homosexuality has long been the impetus for cheap humor, harassment, and hate crimes and it is time to stop inflicting misery. As an elected official I have chosen to align myself with fairness and equality for all citizens. As a human being, I will offer acceptance and understanding. It is because I do not have all the answers that I choose to err on the side of compassion and love."
Rep. Wenke won his primary by several hundred votes. Read Wenke's house floor speech about the amendment.
