Jim Kolbe

Congressman Jim Kolbe (AZ)

Congressman Kolbe has been Log Cabin’s strongest ally in Congress. Representing a conservative district in Arizona, Kolbe has courageously charted the most supportive record on gay and lesbian issues of any House Republican. He spoke out forcefully against the anti-gay constitutional amendment on the House floor, saying, "This Congress and those after it should be about protecting and expanding freedoms. This proposed amendment to our constitution is about discrimination. It is about fear. It is unnecessary. It is unwarranted and it should be soundly defeated."

Congressman Kolbe has been a strong supporter of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the Permanent Partners Immigration Act, the Early Treatment for HIV Act, and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. As the only openly gay Republican in Congress, Kolbe has been a powerful voice for gays and lesbians in the GOP. Kolbe is not running for re-election after 11 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He leaves behind a distinguished career as the Republican leader on free trade and open markets. Log Cabin honored Kolbe at its national dinner in Washington in April, 2006.
