Record of Governor Bill Weld on LGBT Issues

Over the past 15 years, no other elected official in America, Democrat or Republican, has a better record on LGBT issues than Governor Bill Weld.

Shortly after taking office in 1990, Governor Weld signed an executive order providing domestic partner benefits for gay and lesbian state workers. He also signed hate crimes legislation and expanded anti-discrimination protection.  Weld broke historic ground by creating the Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, which aimed to reduce suicide rates among gay and lesbian young people in the Commonwealth.

Unlike some Democrats, and too many Republicans, Governor Weld supported, and continues supporting, the Goodridge decision in Massachusetts that extended civil marriage equality to gay and lesbian Bay State residents.  Governor Weld has also been an outspoken opponent of any effort to put an anti-gay amendment in the Massachusetts Constitution or the U.S. Constitution.

Log Cabin will continue our dialogue with Governor Weld regarding the need for civil marriage equality across the country.  We will continue discussing with him the need to take steps in New York to further protect and recognize gay and lesbian families.
