Log Cabin Republicans Condemn Obama on ‘Defense of Marriage Act’

June 15, 2009, Washington, DC – The Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement condemning the Obama administration’s disturbing brief in support of the federal ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ (DOMA):

“Once again, President Obama has betrayed gay and lesbian Americans.” said Log Cabin Republicans National Chairman Terry Hamilton. “When Barack Obama ran for President, he pledged to fully repeal the Clinton-era ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ but President Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress have yet to follow up with any action,” continued Hamilton. Hamilton added: “The lack of movement from this administration on repealing DOMA and ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is appalling.”

On June 11, 2009, the Obama administration filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed in federal court challenging the constitutionality of the ‘Defense of Marriage Act.’ In its brief, the Obama administration argued that it is reasonable for states to favor heterosexual marriages because they are the “traditional and universally recognized form of marriage.” Most appalling, however, is the Obama administration’s citing of decades-old cases ruling that states do not have to recognize incest-marriages to support the administration’s argument that other states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages under the Constitutions “full faith and credit” clause.

“I’m feeling a sense of déjà vu here to Bill Clinton’s throwing gay and lesbian Americans ‘under the bus’ when he enacted the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy and signed DOMA. So much for ‘change we can believe in’,” concluded Hamilton.
