Log Cabin Congratulates Senator Lincoln Chafee for GOP Primary Victory

(Providence, RI) – “Senator Lincoln Chafee’s primary win is a victory for all fair-minded Republicans in Rhode Island and across the country.” said Log Cabin Executive Vice President Patrick Sammon.  “We congratulate Senator Chafee and look forward to helping him win re-election in November.”

"Log Cabin proudly stood with Senator Chafee during this difficult primary fight," said Log Cabin—Rhode Island President Ray Bell, who volunteered on the Chafee campaign along with other Log Cabin members.  "The Senator has clearly shown that Republicans can achieve victory with an inclusive message of freedom and fairness for all Americans."

Chafee won last night's primary with 54% of the vote over Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey.  Club for Growth poured $1 million into Laffey's campaign in a vicious effort to distort Senator Chafee's record and divide the Republican Party.  "This was a hugely important election.  A Laffey victory would've emboldened special interest groups to target other mainstream Republicans across America," said Sammon.

Senator Chafee is one of Log Cabin's strongest allies in the Senate.  In addition to twice voting against the anti-family Federal Marriage Amendment, he has supported the hate crimes bill, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), and the Permanent Partners Immigration Act.

Log Cabin supported Chafee's campaign through the LCR-PAC and through member donations from across the country.  Log Cabin joined mainstream GOP groups, Republican Party leaders, and many GOP Senators in working to help Chafee win this primary.   "Log Cabin will do everything possible to help Senator Chafee win his election in November," said Sammon.
