WASHINGTON, DC -- The DC Chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans commends the City Council of the District of Columbia for its courage and conviction to stand up and support the rights of all of its citizens. This morning, the Council cast an historic vote that is the first step to bringing marriage equality to the nation's capital with an overwhelming majority of 11-2 voting in favor of the measure.
Chapter President Chris Scalise praised the Council's actions by saying, "We applaud today's historic vote that acknowledges the basic human dignity of all District residents. Marriage equality gives same-sex couples access to one of the foundational institutions in our society as well as more practically affording them the same legal rights and responsibilities as other couples, such as hospital visitation or health benefits which are often taken for granted."
Bill #18-482, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009, was first introduced by At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson. This historic legislation still needs to pass a second vote of the Council in two weeks, at which point it will be sent to Mayor Adrian Fenty for his signature. Fenty has promised he will sign the bill. The bill must also await a 30 day Congressional review.
Scalise added, "We now call on Congress to respect DC's Home Rule to let us be governed by our own laws. We will work with the City Council and Members of Congress as needed to see this bill become law."
