Log Cabin Republicans Congratulate Senator Arlen Specter on His Victory
(Washington, DC)—Log Cabin Republicans congratulate Arlen Specter (R-PA) on his victory against primary opponent, Congressman Pat Toomey. “This is a victory for the forces of inclusion in the Republican Party. Senator Specter has been a valued friend to gays and lesbians, and the people of Pennsylvania are lucky to have such a powerful voice representing them in the Senate,” said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director Patrick Guerriero. Senator Specter’s primary opponent, Rep. Pat Toomey, was a supporter of the anti-family Federal Marriage Amendment and provided a stark contrast to Senator Specter on questions relating to equality for gays and lesbians. Senator Specter is a co-sponsor of hate crimes legislation, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and has been an advocate for global and domestic HIV/AIDS funding. “Republicans in Pennsylvania were given a clear choice. They have chosen to repudiate the politics of exclusion. Senator Specter’s victory is a victory for a big tent Republican Party. His victory is yet another set back for the extremists who are pushing an anti-family Constitutional Amendment,” concluded John Partain, President of the Philadelphia Log Cabin Republicans.
