Dear Mrs. Reagan,
The members of Log Cabin Republicans of California offer our most sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of your husband and our beloved President Ronald Reagan.
As you may know, Log Cabin Republicans owe President Reagan a particular debt of gratitude. In 1978, the Briggs Initiative was placed on the ballot here in California. It would have denied employment to gays and lesbians as public school teachers. A group of gay Republicans met with your husband and convinced him that this form of discrimination did not belong in his vision for the future of America. Courageously, he stood with us and publicly opposed the measure. He did so in a culture where such a stand could have resulted in tremendous political consequences but, being a man of principle, he knew that it was right. The initiative was defeated. Those gay Republicans formed the first Log Cabin chapter. Your husband’s great legacy includes helping to form that chapter.
President Reagan’s vision of America was always about the future and never about the past. His America was prosperous, self confident, and filled with opportunity. As we build on that legacy, thanks to him, our future will be brighter, more secure, and blessed with the promise of equality for all.
The Republican Party of Ronald Reagan was united by that same message of hope and optimism, of lowering taxes, strengthening our military, and reducing the reach of government into our private lives. His Republican Party was a family that embraced all of its sons and daughters.
Log Cabin Republicans will never forget the risk Ronald Reagan took for us. We will continue to proudly defend his legacy of freedom and opportunity for all Americans. We want America to know that you have our love and support.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Bissiri
Chairman
