Election 2008
Log Cabin is encouraged that Sen. John McCain has won the Republican nomination for President. Here's a summary of his record on issues of importance to LGBT voters.
Making his second run at the White House, Senator McCain at first played it safe this time around by eschewing his maverick streak embodied by the "Straight Talk Express" that made him a media darling in 2000. Last summer, he changed tactics back to his original strategy, winning him a come from behind victory in the GOP primary. Independents and mainstream Republicans provide solid support for him. However some conservatives distrust him for advocating campaign finance reform and opposing President Bush’s tax cuts (though he now supports having the tax cuts made permanent). He is benefitting from a divisive Democrat primary--as many national polls have him leading over both Senators Clinton and Obama. Plus, he is polling well in traditionally blue states such as New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington.
On issues of concern to Log Cabin, Sen. McCain has a mixed record. He consistently opposes the anti-family Federal Marriage Amendment. McCain voted against the proposal in both 2004 and 2006, saying the matter should be left to the states. Watch Sen. McCain's 2004 speech opposing the FMA. He supported Arizona's 2006 effort to ban marriage equality and roll back domestic partner benefits offered by some municipalities in the state. McCain opposes hate crime legislation and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). He supports the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law, which prevent gays and lesbians from serving openly and honestly in the U.S. military. He also supports taking an aggressive posture against totalitarian regimes—regimes that threaten, imprison, and sometimes kill gay and lesbian people. He also supports measures that will benefit gay and lesbian business owners.
