Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) Stands Up for Gays & Lesbians

One of Log Cabin's strongest allies in the U.S. House, Ros-Lehtinen again urges Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice to eliminate inequities faced by gays and lesbians serving the State Department.

Ros-Lehtinen reiterated the need for action in a letter co-signed by four senior House members.  In February, Ros-Lehtinen questioned Rice during a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and urged the Department of State to provide domestic partners with comparable benefits, protections, and services as those enjoyed by family members of married foreign service officers.

"We ask much of our foreign service officers who operate under sometimes difficult and dangerous circumstances, and yet we treat some as second class citizens," said Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Republican on the Committee.

Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen also last month met with the Egyptian Foriegn Minister and urged the country to end its harassment and arrest of gay men.  "Log Cabin thanks Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen for once again standing up for gays and lesbians not only here at home, but throughout the world," said Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon.
